About me
Background and Approach
Hi, I’m Brian, an orthopaedic theatre practitioner by day and fountain pen repair enthusiast by every other available hour.

I work primarily in joint replacement surgeries, which probably explains why I enjoy fixing things both inside and outside the operating theatre. When I’m not in scrubs, you’ll usually find me surrounded by fountain pens, ink, calligraphy tools, and tiny restoration parts that somehow disappear the moment I need them.

My creative journey started with digital illustration, which eventually turned into creating stickers, bookmarks, and art prints. Over time, that passion naturally evolved into calligraphy and eventually fountain pen repair and restoration, especially using traditional urushi techniques and materials. I love bringing old pens back to life and giving them another chance to write beautiful stories. I still enjoy taking on calligraphy projects as well, especially the interesting and meaningful ones that allow creativity and craftsmanship to come together.

I believe handwriting still has magic in it, good pens deserve a second life, and there is no such thing as owning too much ink.

Urushi as a repair material
Vintage Fountain Pens
Urushi is a traditional Japanese lacquer that I use in fountain pen repair and restoration for its strength, durability, and natural beauty. It allows damaged or worn surfaces to be carefully rebuilt to last a long time. Each restoration process is slow and intentional, embracing craftsmanship that values patience, precision, and respect for the original piece.
Restoring vintage fountain pens involves carefully repairing and preserving older writing instruments so they can be used again while maintaining their original character. It often requires careful study and research, especially since resources can be limited, to avoid causing irreversible damage. Each pen is approached with respect for its history, focusing on function, aesthetics, and the unique story it carries through time.

Calligraphy Projects
Careful diagnosis, repair, and restoration of fountain pens to bring them back to full working condition. This includes both modern and vintage pens, with attention to function, writing performance, and preserving original character wherever possible.
Custom calligraphy work for meaningful and creative projects, blending traditional techniques with personal expression. From names and quotes to bespoke commissions, each piece is crafted with attention to detail and individuality.
